OUR CHARITY IN SRILANKA

SRI LANKA WORK PLAN

Decades of violent conflict has killed about 85,000 people, massively damaged the economy, social infrastructure and left many more injured and homeless.

Whilst Sri Lanka is classed as a lower middle income country, nevertheless half the population are living below the poverty line, and there is a shortfall in state support for social services, education and health.

Key challenges

The hostilities between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have caused an emergency situation in the North and East of the island, the most affected by the conflict that finished with a great loss of life.  The devastation resulting in this region requires ongoing support.

Many families still remain stuck in welfare centres, unable to return home, while those who return find themselves homeless.  Without resources, many are starving and are trying to start again from scratch.

The conflict and the recent tsunami which has affected most of the island has hampered the rehabilitation of the poorist victims.  We are working with other organizations to get relief to mothers and children living below the poverty line.
