OUR CHARITY IN SIERRA LEONE

SIERRA LEONE

Sierra Leone is recovering from a long, bitter and vicious civil war which devastated communities, infrastructures and the lives of its citizens.

Kailahun is said to be where Sierra Leone's civil war started - and where, 11years later, it ended.  However, despite six years of peace, the damaging legacy of conflict still looms over this desperate region.

It is once again safe to travel to Sierra Leone, schools have re-opened and business is up and running.  Tears to Smiles spent £3,619 in Sierra Leone during 2005- 2006 and is continuing its support as much as possible.

Sierra Leone's civil war had a devastating impact on its citizens and the people of Sierra Leone are still trying to cope with crippling poverty which strangles so many of her communities.

Key challenges

Since 1991, civil war between Sierra Leone's government and the Revolutionary United Front resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than one million people, many of whom are still refugees in the surrounding countries of Africa.

Sierra Leone is the lowest-ranking country in the world for life expectancy, access to education and standard of living.

Average life expectancy is 31.

HIV and AIDS: The civil war and displacement of large numbers of people have created conditions which encourage rapid and widespread transmission of HIV.

We are still currently (2011) raising money to help people suffering from HIV and AIDS to buy medicines.
